It is thought that every elderly has at least one
dermatological problem. Although the exact epidemiology of dermatological
diseases in long-term/nursing-home care is not known, each of the geriatric
dermatoses can be encountered. Although healthcare professionals and nursing
staff generally focus on pressure injuries and incontinence-related dermatitis,
infectious diseases, and epidemics can also be significant problems in nursing
homes. This section addresses only pressure injuries, as geriatric dermatoses
will be covered in detail in subsequent sections.
