Eating disorders (EDs) affect all organ systems but cardiovascular system complications are important because of the impact on morbidity and mortality. The association between cardiovascular issues and EDs predominantly arises from nutritional deficiencies, with individuals diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa are most often at greatest risk of structural and functional cardiac abnormalities. As in patients with Bulimia Nervosa, other cardiovascular abnormalities secondary to electrolyte imbalances also occur. EDs that have been newly defined, such as Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder and Binge Eating Disorder, may also have distinct cardiovascular complications, although more research is needed to fully understand their characteristics and seriousness.
