Chiari malformation (CM) is the protrusion of the lower parts of the cerebellum, the cerebellar tonsils and/or the midbrain stem regions, out of the skull and down into the spinal canal. The history of Chiari malformation disease dates back to the 1880s, and with today's advanced radiology technologies such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT), it can be easily and quickly diagnosed. The purpose of this section of the book is to provide patients and family members with medical information about the natural course, diagnosis, and treatment options of Chiari malformation disease. All concerns and questions of patients diagnosed with Chiari malformation should be answered by the Neurologist and Neurosurgeon doctors who will conduct the diagnosis and treatment process. In addition, answers are provided to the questions of CM patients and their relatives regarding what they should pay attention to during the diagnosis, follow-up, and treatment processes of this disease.
